2012 Events
Meet and greet with Judges Hideki Fujii and Daisuke Nagumo from Japan. On Wednesday, November 21, ABAS held a meet and greet with two visiting judges from Japan at Il Fornaio. Thanks to the Honorable Danette “Dee” Brown for coordinating this special opportunity. 
NAPABA Convention. ABAS members (including judges, past presidents, board members, and law students) attended the 24th annual National Asian Pacific American Bar Association convention in Washington, D.C. from November 15th through 18th. We had a great time and were honored and proud to have received the 2012 affiliate of the year award. Past president Hon. Danette “Dee” Brown received the trailblazer award, and past presidents Nancy Lee and Ruthe Ashley received the Women’s Leadership Awards for their service to NAPABA as past NAPABA presidents. Congratulations to all!

ABAS CLE Lunch. On November 13, 2012, ABAS presented “Which Way to the Hearing Room? What Every Civil Practitioner Needs to Know About Administrative Law.” The panel was moderated by the Honorable Danette “Dee” Brown and featured the Honorable Jaime R. Roman, Sacramento County Superior Court and the Honorable Rebecca M. Westmore, Office of Administrative Hearings. The panel discussed the overlap between civil litigation and administrative law, differences in procedure and the rules of evidence, trial/hearing practice, and appellate review.
Monthly Happy Hour. ABAS held its November happy hour on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at Pour House (1910 Q Street, Sacramento).
Bench Bar Reception. ABAS was a sponsor of the Sacramento County Bar Association’s Bench Bar Reception on October 30, 2012, at the California Automobile Museum where the Honorable Judy Holzer Hersher was honored as Judge of the Year.
My Sister’s House Run for a Safe Haven. ABAS’s team, the Legal Eagles, came out in force on Saturday, October 27, 2012, to support My Sister’s House.
Unity Bar Dinner. The Unity Bar celebrated its 25th anniversary dinner on October 25, 2012, at the Doubletree Hotel. Retired California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno was the keynote speaker, and Justice Elena Duarte was the emcee for the evening. ABAS awarded its community service award to APAPA and its scholarship to Hanh Le, a University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law student. Congratulations!
August Happy Hour. On Wednesday, August 1, ABAS and the Sacramento Chapter of the American Constitution Society held a joint happy hour at K-bar in Sacramento.
Member BBQ. ABAS held its member summer BBQ on Saturday, July 21st. Jeffrey and Melissa Javinar kindly opened up their home for this fun afternoon!

Rally to Restore Court Funding. In conjunction with the Sacramento County Bar Association, ABAS Member Josh Kaizuka organized this rally on June 13, 2012, at the Sacramento County Courthouse, to protest cuts made to the judiciary’s budget.
June 2012 Happy Hour – ABAS had its monthly membership happy hour on June 6 at Firestone Public House in Sacramento. Thanks to everyone who came out to drink and mingle with us!
API Night at the Rivercats. On May 31, 2012, ABAS participated in the 2nd Annual API Night with the Sacramento Rivercats, organized by the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce. Asian/Pacific Islander organizations and small businesses throughout the Sacramento region met and mingled and enjoyed the Rivercats game against the Fresno Grizzlies.
Mentoring Law Students. ABAS attorneys (Grace Arupo, Teresa Chan, Kathryn Doi, Colleen Howard, Sophia Kwan, Angela Lai, Nancy Lee, Jeannie Lee Jones, Catherine Oh, Kristi Morioka, Patti Reeves, Jennifer Rosario, Steve Tsuyuki, Kara Ueda, and Rick Uno) volunteered to host small dinners or lunches with 28 law students from McGeorge and UC Davis School of Law. They provided an excellent way to pass on words of wisdom and advice to our future API and ABAS leaders. If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the upcoming academic year, please contact the Mentorship Committee coordinators, Rick Uno or Jeannie Lee Jones.

My Sister’s House Gala. ABAS is a proud partner and supporter of My Sister’s House and attended its Stop! In the Name of Love! reception and gala event on May 15, 2012.
ABAS Law Foundation Food and Wine Tasting. The ABAS Law Foundation had its annual food and wine tasting on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Pavilions in Sacramento.
First Annual Sacramento Community Organizations Network Meeting. ABAS was proud to be a part of the first annual Sacramento Community Organizations Networking Meeting, co-organized by APAPA and CAPITAL on May 7, 2012.

OCA Dragon Boat Festival. ABAS and one of our community partners, My Sister’s House, shared a table at the OCA Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento.
La Raza Lawyers of Sacramento. ABAS was proud to support our fellow SCBA affiiate La Raza Lawyer of Sacramento at its installation dinner on April 19, 2012 at Mayahuel.
UC Davis APALSA Inaugural Banquet. ABAS Board members and ABAS members attended UC Davis APALSA’s Inaugural Banquet on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Garden Pavilion at McClellen Park.
31st Anniversary & Awards Dinner. ABAS held its 31st Anniversary & Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the Tsakopoulous Library Galleria. AABA’s 35th Annual Installation Dinner. ABAS board members attended the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area’s 35th annual installation dinner on March 23, 2012, at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco and sat with our colleagues from the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley .
MCLE Lunch. ABAS was pleased to have Patrice Truman, Esq., a jury and trial consultant, present “Biases in Jury Selection” on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Mennemeier, Glassman & Stroud LLP. The program explained the conscious and unconscious biases jurors have and how they may affect jury selection techniques and strategies.
Happy Hour. ABAS had its first monthly happy hour at Il Fornaio on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Please join us again at Il Fornaio on April 4 for a no-host happy hour to beat the mid-week blues and to mix and mingle with fellow ABAS members.
Bowling Mixer. ABAS members and law students mingled at a mixer on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at AMF Land Park Lanes in Sacramento.
LSNC Race for Justice.The ABAS “Legal Eagles” participated in Legal Services of Northern California’s annual Valentine’s Race for Justice on Saturday, February 11, 2012.

McGeorge APALSA Culture Night. ABAS members and friends attended the McGeorge APALSA Culture Night on January 27, 2012, at Happy Garden Restaurant in Sacramento.
Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce Installation Dinner. ABAS members attended the Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce’s 19th annual installation and awards dinner on January 20, 2012. Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye was an honoree.
ABAS Swearing-in at the California Supreme Court. ABAS began the new year with a swearing-in ceremony at the California Supreme Court in San Francisco on January 11, 2012. ABAS is deeply grateful to Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye for swearing in the ABAS and ABAS Law Foundation boards and extends it appreciation and thanks to both the Chief Justice and Justice Ming Chin for visiting with us after the swearing-in.
2011 Events
ABAS Holiday Party. ABAS members and friends celebrated 2011 and the holidays at a holiday mixer on December 14 at Frank Fat’s. Thanks for making 2011 a productive and enjoyable year for us!
My Sister’s House Run for a Safe Haven. ABAS members and friends walked and ran in support of My Sister’s House on November 5, 2011.
ABAS Members BBQ. On Saturday, August 27th, ABAS President Grace Arupo hosted a BBQ at her home.
Angel Island Field Trip. On Saturday, July 30th, ABAS members and friends took a road trip to Angel Island. Angel Island is known as the “Ellis Island of the West,” as millions of mostly Asian immigrants were processed there between 1910-1940. Angel Island is now a state park accessible by ferry from either San Francisco or Tiburon.
1st Annual API Night with the Sacramento Rivercats. ABAS joined with other API organizations on July 14, 2011 as the Rivercats took on the Fresno Grizzlies (Giants AAA team).
CAPITAL Gala. ABAS members attended the black tie CAPITAL (Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership) Gala on June 25, 2011.
Unity Mixer. ABAS and our fellow Unity Bar members (including WLS, SABA, La Raza, Sac Legal, Barristers, and the Sacramento County Bar Association) had a mixer at the “Other Office” (928 2nd Street, Sacramento) on May 26, 2011.
Food From the Bar. ABAS assisted with the Sacramento County Bar Association’s 2011 Sacramento “Food from the Bar” program by helping with the Sacramento Food Bank’s mobile food distribution program on May 10, 2011.

Student/Member Mixer Bowling , April 9 – Students and ABAS attorneys bowled on Saturday, April 9 at the UC Davis MU.
30th Anniversary Gala. ABAS thanks the nearly 300 people – ABAS past presidents and members, judges, elected officials, lawyers, law students and faculty, and other supporters – who attended our 30th anniversary dinner on Thursday March 10, 2011, and Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye for being the keynote speaker. We look forward to the next 30 years!
Chief Justice of California Investiture. ABAS was a gold sponsor of the Investiture Celebration for the Honorable Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Chief Justice of California, on February 10, 2011, at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento.
Career Day. Law students attended Career Day at McGeorge School of Law on Saturday, February 5, 2011. The day included panel presentations about practicing law in both the private and public sectors and mock interviews.
New Year and New Bar Admittees Mixer. ABAS celebrated the new year and the newest members of the California State Bar on January 20, 2011 at Il Fornaio.
Swearing In Ceremony ABAS and ABAS Law Foundation Board members were sworn in by the Honorable Russell Hom, Sacramento County Superior Court Judge on January 13, 2011.

Unity Bar Dinner ABAS members attended the Unity Bar dinner on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel. ABAS honored the Asian Community Center and awarded a scholarship to McGeorge law student Vannie Nguyen.
ABAS Happy Hour Mixer ABAS held a happy hour mixer at Il Fornaio on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 for attorneys and law students.
ABAS Law Foundation Golf Tournament The ABAS Law Foundation held its 22nd annual golf tournament on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Turkey Creek Golf Club.
ABAS Law Foundation Wine Tasting The ABAS Law Foundation held its annual wine tasting at the Pavilions shopping center on May 13, 2010.
Goodwin Liu Confirmation Hearing ABAS members gathered at U.S. Legal Support on April 16, 2010 to watch the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Ninth Circuit nominee Goodwin Liu.
