VABANC is accepting applications for its 2013 Scholarship Awards. VABANC has historically recognized students who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the needs of the Vietnamese-American or Vietnamese community by awarding 2 scholarships of at least $1,000 each. Priority will be given to those who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the Vietnamese-American or Vietnamese community in Northern California and to those who will be using the scholarship award towards public interest or social justice work, either by pursuing post-graduate work or for a summer position. Open to all currently enrolled law students, the scholarships are intended to provide assistance to students toward their public interest or social justice goals. The 2013 scholarship recipient(s) will be recognized at VABANC’s annual scholarship dinner on September 27, 2013, at the University Club in Palo Alto (attendance mandatory). California Energy Commission Attorney Position

The California Energy Commission has an opening for an attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel in Sacramento. Duties include drafting documents such as orders, decisions, contracts, regulations, and legislation, representing the Commission or staff in sensitive and complex proceedings, including power plant licensing cases, and developing legal strategies for the Commission. The successful applicant should have strong analytic and writing skills and have knowledge and experience, or demonstrated interest, in California public contract law, State and federal environmental or energy law, California laws governing regulatory agencies, and administrative hearings. ABAS will hold a MCLE lunch on April 30 regarding legal malpractice at Downey Brand (621 Capitol Mall, Sacramento), from 12-1. The program will feature William Munoz, Esq., who will speak about common practice areas giving rise to malpractice and practice tips to avoid them. The talk will also address conflicts of interest and how to avoid them. Lunch will be provided. $25 for ABAS members, $30 for non-members. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is seeking a talented, motivated, and collaborative attorney to join its legal team as an attorney at either the senior ($117,834-$162,373) or journey ($101,648-$126,912) level, depending on experience. This key position reports directly to the General Counsel and will be responsible for advising the Board of Directors, management, and employees on employment-related matters, including civil service rules, employee discipline, collective bargaining negotiations and grievances, workers compensation, ethics, and employee benefits. This position requires demonstrated expertise in employment-related areas of the law, including a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience as a practicing attorney in employment-related legal matters.

Student Mixer/Happy Hour

ABAS will hold a student mixer/happy hour on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Capitol Bowl, 900 W. Capitol Avenue, West Sacramento, at 5:30 p.m. Capitol Bowl is just over the Tower Bridge, a few minutes away from downtown Sacramento. This event is free for ABAS members and area law students and $20 for non-members. Bowling is not required. Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy: Deadline 3/11/13

NAPABA encourages ABAS members to apply to the inaugural Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA) in Minneapolis, MN, on June 27-28, 2013. The CBLA is a collaborative effort among the American Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, National Bar Association, National Native American Bar Association, and NAPABA. The CBLA will strengthen the pipeline of diverse bar association leaders through leadership training and professional development programs. The CBLA is intended for up-and-coming bar leaders who have been in practice for 5-15 years and have served as officers of a NAPABA affiliate and/or chair/co-chair of a NAPABA committee.
