Professor Goodwin Liu Confirmed to California Supreme Court

Yesterday, August 31, 2011, the three-member panel of the California Commission on Judicial Appointments unanimously confirmed Professor Goodwin H. Liu’s nomination to the California Supreme Court. He will be sworn in as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California today, September 1, 2011, in Sacramento by Governor Jerry Brown.

Professor Liu is a nationally recognized scholar in the areas of education and constitutional law at the University of California Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he has taught since 2003. He was born in Augusta, Georgia, where his parents were living as doctors recruited from Taiwan to work in underserved areas. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, and received his law degree from Yale University School of Law. Professor Liu’s interest in public service and the law was sparked when he served as a page in the U.S. House of Representatives, thanks to the sponsorship of the late Congressman Robert Matsui.

ABAS is proud to have supported Professor Liu’s nomination and looks forward to his tenure on the California Supreme Court. ABAS thanks Governor Brown’s for nominating Professor Liu, who is Governor Brown’s first Asian Pacific American state high court nominee.
